The Ripley's moved to their home on 10 acres in 1966 and Nan started Hybridizing daylilies in 1998. There are many different gardens on the property with unusual perennials, shrubs, and trees interlaced with the daylilies to give a more intriguing walk through the gardens. There are also 6 large seedlings beds. The seedlings stay in a garden bed for 3 years and then the gardens are refreshed and replanted with new seedlings. Approximately 3,000 seedlings are planted each year. Walkabout Gardens has been a Ball Horticultural Company new variety display garden for four years.

Nan Ripley is an AHS Garden Judge, Region One RVP 2005-2006, Region One RPD for 2007-2008 and a Central Iowa Daylilies Society member, Story County Master Gardener, Ames Garden Club member, member and co-hort at ISU Reiman Gardens, and a Board member of the Iowa Arboretum. Nan is an active writer and speaker to garden groups throughout the United States. Please contact Nan if you are interested in having a plantswomen and daylily hybridizer speak to your group.

WALKABOUT GARDENS is an AHS National Display Garden. We welcome the opportunity to share our gardens with visitors during the bloom season. Please call ahead so we will be able to give you a personal tour.
